  16. <p>Noriega faces up to 120 years on eight drug counts
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     In the long and perverse annals of crime, few felons have
  19. matched the dizzying fall of Manuel Noriega: from Panamanian
  20. dictator to convicted drug dealer. He was still the ruler of his
  21. country when an American grand jury indicted him in February
  22. 1988 for narcotics trafficking. The following year the U.S.
  23. invasion of Panama led to his arrest.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Noriega's trial on drug and racketeering charges began in
  26. Miami last September and finally ended last week. The jurors
  27. pondered for four days, then declared themselves deadlocked,
  28. with one adamantly for acquittal. The judge ordered them to try
  29. again. Next day, surprisingly, they agreed: Noriega was guilty
  30. on eight of the 10 counts, which carry a possible sentence of
  31. 120 years in prison.
